If you can't beat them...

House Sparrow ( Passer domesticus )

A quiet day round home.

The blip is a male House Sparrow almost into winter plumage.  Sadly this is another species that has descended to the stage of being listed on the Red List.  The decline in numbers could be because of a number of things.  Loss of nest sites owing to fewer cavities in buildings and loss of food supply with better harvesting and storage of grain are thought to be contributing factors.

A short lived species with an average life span of only three years and a chick mortality rate of around 50% in the first year.
