Mid October blooming

We write the 11th of October in the Northern hemisphere. Normally that would mean autumn.
But see, even the poppies are still blooming. A quote from Wikipedia: In the temperate zones, poppies bloom from spring into early summer.
I like those flowers, but isn't this a bit weird?
