The view up a badger's nose

The reconstruction of the badger skull is almost complete. This is the view up the poor beast's nose. The white, complicated, frilly structures are the turbinal bones. These scroll-like  bones provide a large surface for the olfactory membrane that provides the badger with an acute sense of smell.
