Holly

I love the colors of fall. They are so vibrant, like summer’s last push before a winter’s rest. Except holly persists into the winter and provides the birds with a hiding place and food.

There aren’t that many varieties of holly that are hardy in our zone 5-6. This holly (ilex x messerveae) was one of my first that I planted in 2001 along with its mate. Being dioecious, I planted a male and a female. However today, both shrubs produce berries. Not sure what that says about the habits of my hollies.
