World Cup Winners

West Auckland AFC lay claim to being the first and second team to win the World Cup. A huge claim. In 1909 and again as holders in 1911 they represented Great Britain in Turin, Italy against the best teams from around Europe. Mainly coal miners who funded their own travel they won both times and as such retained the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy. They lost pay whilst they were away from work and that should remind us of the true roots of the game.
