Petworth House Deer Park and Art

We drove to Petworth down the A24 because the A3 was closed. (They are building an exciting new bridge but it's a bit of a nuisance right now.) The journey was rough, and when we got to Petworth House the car park was full. We had to park over a mile away at Petworth Deer Park car park, and I wasn't sure if I could manage the walk all the way to the house to see the Turner paintings there.

But it was magical! It was bitterly cold after the last few days heat, but sunny, and the deer park was beautiful with endless views over green land, and herds of deer running beside and occasionally across the path.

The lakes were full of geese, and deer came down to drink.

We did see some Turners, and I was rather taken with a painting by someone called Leslie (in the extra), but it was the deer park that was the star of the day.
