Little Angel

I’ve always found graveyards peaceful places - melancholy yes, but often beautiful.  There are the great cemeteries - Pere Lachaise, La Recolteta and our own Highgate - resting places of the famous, full of grandiose monuments. Then there are the tiny village graveyards, gathered round old churches under ancient yews.

Today it’s the cemetery of St Tudno that I explore - the church on Llandudno’s Great Orme. Once the town’s main place of burial, coffin processions winding their way up the steep roads of the Orme, but it’s been closed to burials for some time.

The grave stones stretch their way across the slopes, the grounds well-maintained, grass unintentionally manicured by sheep that have managed to get within the boundaries despite the gates.  All is quiet here today, the views magnificent across a few wind-stunted trees towards the sea. It’s certainly the most beautiful place to be laid to rest.

As usual, I end up with several shots of different monuments or views, but in the end I just can’t resist this melancholic little angel, decorated by a crocheted star around her neck, glistening cobwebs adding to her mystery.

In extras, there’s a view across the graveyard to the Orme.
