Slug Turnaround

I watched this fellow slide up onto a big flat top mushroom. 
It started across, but, in what must be an extremely high-speed turn for a slug, it did an about face and slid back off again.
If slugs could jump I suspect this fellow would have jumped off of the mushroom. 
I wondered if it could sense a toxin in the mushroom.
