After Effects

The local news & social media sites are full of images depicting cars up to their roofs in flood water, tractors & trailers ferrying children home from school, and so on. A photo of a small boat helping to ferry people in the small town of Debenham has even made it to the Guardian website. Suffolk is still operating in "major incident" mode as the water running off fields & roads is still slowly making its way to the rivers.

I tried to look for something on a domestic scale for today's Blip. We weren't really affected & much of the surface water has drained away - leaving the ditches full to the brim, of course. It's difficult to show the height of the water from general views of the ditches, but the one I've chosen is looking down on the ditch at the corner of our property which receives water from the adjacent field in addition to parts of two gardens. The pipe is the outfall of our Klargester (septic tank for those not familiar with rural life). Luckily the pump is protected by an anti-flood valve, but the very experienced local firm which installed it didn't expect it to be needed. We don't recollect the level to have been quite this high before, even after snow melted very rapidly! Hopefully now our newish neighbour will realise the importance of keeping all drainage ditches clear...
