Arch - Golden Gully - Hill End

This area of Hill End was the site of a lot of alluvial gold prospecting during the 1870's. The Chinese miners in particular worked these clay gullies - digging tunnels & panning for gold.

Hill End is a famous gold mining town, just north of Bathurst. It reached its peak in the 1870's. To give some perspective of the size of the population of prospectors & their families at the time, the town & surrounds boasted some 52 hotels. Now days, it is almost a ghost town, but for a small collection of National Parks & Wildlife restored cottages & stores, plus the Royal Hotel.
