I photographed this cycad, with impressive fruit cone, in a neighbour's garden as I walked to the village this afternoon. Cycads originated very early in the evolutionary process, around 200 million years ago. A webpage by the Australian Native Plant Society has lots of info. I suspect this is Cycas revoluta, or sago palm, which originates in Japan. It is a popular garden plant and readily available in nurseries here.
