Bumper

Today was the last day of the May Bumps. You'll recall from last Saturday's photo, that it is normal for Cambridge University to hold its May events in June.

Mr Pandammonium and I went to the Plough to watch some of the action.

Conditions weren't great. The flow of the River Cam is usually barely visible. In fact, if the wind is from the east, the river looks as if it is flowing the wrong way. Today, the wind was making it look like it was flowing fast in the right direction. This meant that the rowers would be rowing against the current and into a headwind. Rather them than me. At least it wasn't raining - while we were there, at least.

When a boat bumps another, the two boats pull over to the side, where the rowers who bumped are decorated with greenery plucked from the trees. If you bump another boat on each of the four days, you win a blade and the cox is given the college flag to hold on the victory row back up the river. As you can see in the picture, this Churchill women's boat did just that.

In fact, Churchill did so well, that they won Milton Brewery's Pegasus Cup this year. This particularly pleased Mr Pandammonium, who was a member of Churchill Boat Club.
