Double Duty

Before the farmers' market opened this morning, I did a brief photo shoot for a friend of mine who does publications, among many other things, for a local nonprofit I support. She needed an informal portrait of organic farmers Mike and Kim, above, for the nonprofit's upcoming annual report.

We've been buying their organic produce at the Bellingham Farmers Market ever since our arrival here more than a decade ago, and more recently, their pasture-raised chickens as well, and consider Mike and Kim as our friends, as well as our farmers.

Mike was the first board president of the Bellingham Farmers Market, which opened in 1993, and has put endless hours and energy into the organization. He has mentored many new farmers over the years, a number of whom now also are vendors at the Bellingham Farmers Market. Kim, a nurse at the local hospital, pitches in on a variety of tasks at the farm as well, as do their three children, now young adults, and a crew of other helpers.

It's a joy to be able to buy local organic food from folks like them!
