In Memory…..

…… of the Interislander ferry “Wahine” which, in a ferocious storm, foundered and sank in Wellington Harbour on the 10th of April, 1968. 53 souls lost their lives. It is forever etched in my memory as Keith was deputy Port Health Officer at the time and had a small part to play. Nearly every newspaper relating to the tragedy are in a bag in my garage as I type. The two big anchor chain links shown here are a part of a number of them which are stretched across the decking at the end of the wharf at Mapua. A poignant memorial. I and family members spent time together in Mapua this evening.
