After much deliberation, I ended my career as a competitive swimmer.  After the training break during the corona pandemic, it was a lingering issue and a difficult one to decide.  But I did it.
No training on Monday means that I have three days in a row free for a bike ride a little further from home. This weekend we will make use of that freedom.  Bert made a route, discussed the hotels and together we hoped for good weather.
The good weather did not materialize.  On the High Fens it barely reached 2 degrees and the rain shower exactly on that part did not make it any better. But oh, such a beautiful colours and so few other cyclists.  The descent into Monschau almost led to hypothermia, but as we continued our journey along the Roer river we did feel a bit warm again.
Tomorrow we will continue following the Roer in the direction of Roermond.  The Roer spring is at approximately 662 meters above TAW (and 660 meters above NAP) in the High Fens, near the highest point in Belgium, Botrange, at Roermond where it ends via a small delta into the Meuse (at 16.8 meters above NAP).
We will have another overnight stay because the river measures 165 kilometers and before we reached Monshau we had already had appr.  Traveled 65 kilometers.  I hope for better weather and just as beautiful a route as today.
