FIELD WORK

Much of the crop harvest locally is finished but there is still some standing corn that needs to be chopped or harvested and there's also some soybeans left to be combined.  No hurry...I've seen it done in the snow. Much of it depends on soybean prices at the time...it might be best to delay harvest until prices go up.

This corn field has already been harvested and here the farmer is discing the remaining stalks into the soil. In theory this fall work will save time in the Spring.  It also has some negative aspects as I believe that if left alone it will help to stabilize the soil and retard erosion in the winter if there is low snow cover and/or in Spring when the frost is still in the ground. Losing soil to wind/water erosion is poor practice over time.

I also think our local farmers just like to drive their tractors.  However, they are an observant lot and if shown that "certain changes" in their practices will save them time and/or money they will change their habits. Apparently, that hasn't happened yet OR I may be completely off in my reasoning.

Any farmers out there want to jump into this morass?  Best in Large.
