Witches' Brooms

So dull and dismal today that I am posting a photograph taken yesterday at Rathen.

The birch tree is sporting a collection of 'witches brooms' - clusters of short twiggy growths resembling birds' nests formed by the tree in response to a trauma such as a fungal infection.
