Winter sketching

My sketching buddy and I have tried to get out one Saturday each month since the spring. We’ve both really enjoyed ourselves and want to continue through the winter. Faced with cold, wet and windy weather we thought we’d try a morning sketching in the warmth of St Magnus cathedral.

What a place to sketch. The shear scale of the pillars, challenging perspective, arches and curves everywhere , as well as pools of light and dark that play tricks with shapes. We enjoyed ourselves so much we think we can spend the winter sketching in the cathedral and not run out of subjects or inspiration. Maybe by spring I’ll have got to grips with the perspective of repeating arches.
