Braced

I always feel a little self conscious about wearing braces, not sure why. I think I have a deep-seated feeling that they belong on elderly gents or else on TV characters who smoke cigars. My father used to wear them, he called them galluses. On looking that word up I see it is derived from gallows...knew they were a bit dodgy.
