European Bison, Suchy

We saw six of these stunning Bison in a forest near Suchy today. We couldn’t get very close to them as they are in a protected area, but had a good view of them in the distance. They are part of a breeding project to increase their numbers in Europe. The forest is divided into three areas and the bison spend 3-5 years in one area whilst the other areas regenerate.

There are estimated to be around 6,000 still living in the wild, mainly in Poland, but haven’t lived in the wild for many years in Switzerland. The European bison are bigger than the American bison, in both weight and height.

The ones born in Suchy have been given names starting with Su. The others that were born elsewhere (Poland) start with Pl or Po. The newcomers will be relocated as they get older to avoid inbreeding. It’s an interesting project and, so far, seems to be successful.

The extras show the forest walk nearby and the view of the tower in Suchy.

Had a lovely drive over to Suchy as the autumn colours are still stunning. Had a walk and lunch with a friend before heading back.
