Wide

The front door of this suburban church in Canberra seems out of proportion - it looks too wide in relation to the rest of the building. That’s because it was designed for steam trains to run right through the building.

All Saints Ainslie began its life in a cemetery - as the  ‘mortuary station’ in Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney. It was built there in the 1860s, at a time when funerals travelled from the city centre to the distant cemetery by train. In time, motor vehicles replaced the train, and the station fell into disuse. In the 1950s the Canberra church parish bought the building, had it demolished, brought to Canberra, and reconstructed in its present location.

The extra is a historic photo of the church at Rookwood in the 1800s.
