Lozarithm's Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Corinne Bailey Rae - New York Transit Queen (Later... with Jools Holland) (broadcast 18 November 2023)
Until I began hearing tracks from Black Rainbows, her fourth album and her first in seven years, I had no idea Corinne Bailey Rae could sound like this, and I like this new awakening now that she is in her forties. Apparently her musical career began in a punk band. The whole album traverses a number of styles and was inspired by her experiences with the Stony Island Arts Bank, a Chicago-based archive of Black art and culture. The song is in tribute to Audrey Smaltz, the first of the African American Miss New York Transits back in 1957.
