Chainsaw Ice Sculpting

One of the wonderful things about living in a coastal community, is the large variety of festivals up and down the coast. About a half hour north of Coos Bay, in the little town of Reedsport, the annual Chainsaw Carving Championships takes place, every year, on Father's Day weekend. The carvings are amazing in general, and most are carved out of logs. Everything from Big Foot to Salmon to bears, etc., and all fantastically detailed.

A temporary ~ and even more so on a warm sunny day like today ~ art form, is the competition involving large blocks of ice. In just a half hour, this eagle was carved out. When we came by about an hour and a half after it's completion, the one next to it had crashed to the ground and this one stood dripping as it melted. We weren't present during the carving, so I'm not sure if the other one crashed before or after it was finished.

It's hard to imagine this fine detail...especially it's beak...carved with a chainsaw. But it was!

I have to write down what we had for lunch at a new little restaurant on the river so I don't forget. It was insane! First there was a large apple fritter on the bottom. Then a layer of BBQ pulled pork, and on top of that, cole slaw. When we read "BBQ pulled pork, fritter, walnuts and cole slaw" most of us were thinking of something savory, like "clam fritters", not APPLE fritters! It was insane, but oh so good!

A very fine Father's Day

Love you, Dad!
