Barony Hall

I attended an event at Barony Hall today and was very impressed by the building's exterior and interior. I didn't know much about its history.

Taking its name from the Barony parish which encircled the east end of the city centre, this red sandstone building was formerly the Barony Church, completed in 1890 and replacing an older 18th Century church. Designed by Sir J.J. Burnet (1857 - 1938), it is an example of the architectural style known as Scottish Gothic Revival.

It is now used as the ceremonial hall for the University of Strathclyde, where graduation ceremonies and other official functions are held. A restoration was completed in 1995 with the installation of three stained glass windows designed by John Clark to commemorate the bi-centenary of the University.
