As Night Follows Day

Saint Catherine's day. Catherine was beheaded by Roman Emperor Maximinus II in 305CE, as part of his persecution of a religious minority. Also associated with Catherine of Aragon, divorced by Henry VIII for failing to provide an heir and due to his lust for Anne Boleyn. Also regarded by some as the first day of winter

The sun rose, spot on time, at 8.02 UTC to reveal the relatively rare sight of West Wales fields white with frost - the warm sea temperature here usually grants this area an exemption. Winter announces its presence. We spent the day walking - a lot of up and down keeping us warm, under cold bright skies - and being a family

After dark we took ourselves - still on foot - to a cinema to see Smoke Sauna Sisterhood - an Estonian documentary film about women fulfilling the ancient, semi-religious tradition in part of that country of Smoke Saunas. Fulfilling the ritual is part of the point. So is sharing the hardships of life, many of them caused by men like Maximinus an Henry. As sure as the sun will rise in the morning
