Baby First Aid

So far behind ……. Posting Friday’s blip on Sunday!

The ongoing full schedule of this week takes us to Daniel and Solveig in Meols. Solveig has booked a Baby First Aid training session to take place in their home - for the parents-to-be plus both sets of grandparents as her parents are visiting from their home in New York.

I’m just kicking myself for not taking photos of the event. We arrive to see four limbless child dummies lined up on the floor, plus four slightly less scary babies; at least the latter have arms and legs.

I think we’re all feeling slightly apprehensive, but our instructor is lovely.  An ex-teacher, she knows just how to approach things, and we’re taken through the ‘what to do ifs’ of choking, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, burns and scalds etc - before we all practice on the dummies. Of course the prospective grandparents have managed to bring up their children without learning how to perform CPR on infants, but we’ve been lucky.

We learn how to use a defibrillator- though accessing one seems more problematic. At least it makes us check where the nearest one to us is located. And we learn about ‘what3words’ as a location marker - not one of our group knew. Every three metre square in the world has apparently been given its own 3 word locator - far more accurate than postcodes! Fascinating!

Fortunately, there’s no end of course test, but we’re encouraged to go over what we’ve learned at regular intervals.  In fairness, it’s been enlightening and fun, and though the thought of dealing with any of these issues is terrifying, at least we now know what to do.

Then it’s on to a local hostelry for an excellent lunch - I enjoy the most delicious katsu cauliflower steak - before we say our goodbyes and head for home.

Having failed to take any photos of the training , today’s main features the course leaflet - though I’m rather worried about the stereotyping here - with a lunchtime family group in extras.
