How To Harbour A Grudge

It mustn't budge.
Anchor it
in your brain.

If it does sink from the top
of your grievances list
give it an upward nudge.

Insist
it's always harboured at
No.1 in your hate parade.

Keep it shipshape.
You don't want it to smudge
or become sludge.

You need it sharp
and painful.

Got that?

But now I must apologise,
in advance,
for what I'm about to say.

It was my intention
to give impartial advice.
I didn't mean to judge
or begrudge you the weird pleasure
you might be getting
from harbouring your grudge

But, are you really prepared to trudge
through life
beset by the burden of it?

Best set it free?
Send it out to sea?
Watch it float
away?

If it does sink
without a trace
you might suddenly discover
you've got a smile on your face.

What do you think?
