What's Venice like?

Even when Venice isn't being spectacular it's still extraordinary - paved footpaths as narrow as one person wide, few if any powered land vehicles, canals as streets, bridges as pedestrian crossings, boats as cars and trucks. And every last item delivered from the nearest canal to its final destination by a porter with a trolley. Mad. Wonderful.
