Red, Green, and Blue

Moon

I went to see Moon today with my brother at the movie theater across campus. When we were going our theater, we ran into our second cousins (one of whom we saw yesterday). So bizarre running into them again the day after we just saw them. We don't see them often, so it was great seeing the movie with them.

Moon was a cool movie. It's an indie flick about cloning and using clones to perform roles which one does not want to necessarily remember or do. The main character, Sam, works on the moon and his time up in space is almost over. A couple days before his flight back home to Earth, he gets into a lunar car accident with another vehicle. After the crash, the movie picks up in the infirmary with Sam resting on a hospital like bed. The audience is to believe that this Sam is the same Sam from the car crash; however, I was thinking, wait a second what happened to his scar on his eye. I felt like something was a bit off. It would be a couple scenes later that the audience would find out that there are two Sams.

Well, to sum things up, the film works well on drawing attention to the ethics of cloning. Is it ethical to clone someone for commercial profit or free work exploitation? Can we use clones as slaves? Is it right to implant memories and make a clone believe that they are in fact the true individual? Moon plays with these questions and wraps them up in a fun movie with a cute and compassionate smiling computer companion. If you are into independent films, this is a great summer indie flick.
