Iklectik: Hainbach on Tape & Synths

Spot the tape loop returning from the audience (at the right) in large

Im and I took the train to London to see Hainbach playing at Iklectic; we previously saw him when he supported Rival Consoles at The Barbican (this day), and it was even more wonderful to see him at the much smaller venue (the hall of an old school) today. We were about 2m from him, and I had to tuck my legs under my chair so that I didn't trip him whenever he changed tape loops... Imogen almost had a tape loop running over her right ear when Hainbach's encore involved a long tape loop that wound through part of the audience.
He made music using a number of his pre-recorded tape loops (running through a Nagra tape recorder and draped over microphone stands) alongside a synthesiser, sampler, and various effects processors and utilities. He created developing textural soundscapes (starting out with deep frequencies tuned to the room modes), and the small venue made for amazing sound quality, as well as the interest of being able to see his processes up close.
He then held an entertaining Q&A after the show, talking through his mobile setup and the approach that he used today, before answering audience questions with good humour and candour despite English being his second language.
What a fantastic experience!
