Layers

Shrek: For your information, there's a lot more to ogres than people think.
(Donkey makes various suggestions...)
Shrek: NO! Layers. Onions have layers. Ogres have layers...You get it? We both have layers.
Donkey: Oh, you both have LAYERS. Oh. You know, not everybody like onions. CAKE! Everybody loves cake! Cakes have layers!
Shrek: I don't care what everyone likes! Ogres are not like cakes.

If you've never seen the first Shrek film, get a kid you know and go watch it, so many good moments.

The cake with layers was a red velvet cake in the Arcada Café on the Giraldo Square in Évora. It's an iconic café, first opened in 1940, and closed during the pandemic, but reopened again now, hoping they manage to keep it going. Mike and I had a coffee there, waiting for Padre Luís, who we had dinner with.

He was meant to come to ours, along with Ermelinda and Cecílio, and I'd spent the morning cooking and cleaning, but then E's auntie died, so they had to go to her wake. And then, on the way back, heard that Deb's friend's little girl had died, so terribly sad.

Life has so many layers.

Gratefuls:
- talking things over with Padre Luís, really helpful
- getting the house, inside and out, a bit more sorted
- excellent book I finished, Tom Lake, by Ann Patchett, NYer review here
