Rebuilding the past

Whenever we are in Woodbridge we try to visit the project building a replica of the Sutton Hoo ship. The wood of the original boat, used to bury a king, had rotted away but left an excellent outline in the compacted sandy soil, as well as rusty rivets in place. All this was recorded in great detail by the various excavators.
Using that information and the help of modern boat designers and other existing ancient boats the project aims to reproduce the boat. They are using the Anglo-Saxon and Viking technology from the relevant period with wooden pegs and iron rivets holding the green oak timbers in place.
It’s going slowly but I was impressed by how far they had come. Right now they need some large oaks so they can cleave out 15 inch planks, avoiding the outer wood and the absolute centre of the trunk.
So if anyone has a large oak they no longer need…
