Spizella breweri breweri

A singing Brewer's Sparrow in the last light of day, South Tufa State Reserve, Mono Lake. This small sparrow is distinct in its lack of distinction--perhaps the best field ID tip is the absence of any striking features. A light brown sparrow with pink bill and legs, Brewer's trills a rapid and varied series of buzzy notes. Of the two subspecies, S. b. breweri inhabits the sagebrush scrub of the western U.S. and Canada. This is only my second sighting of the species ever.
