Spot the graduate

When passing Heriot-Watt campus my wife mentioned she had some exam scripts to collect to mark at home. I should of been sharper as what she really meant was " I need someone to carry the 100 scripts from my office to the car".

The origins of today's academic dress including the robe, hood and classical cap trace back to the first universities in medieval times. Students wore long, sober clothing reflecting their status in society and identifying them as scholars. Whilst fashions changed, the sense of purpose and propriety evoked by formal academic dress along with practicalities of marking students out in a crowd has ensured that the traditional garments remain in, for most students "occasional use".
