All I want for Christmas, Part Two

Festooned in seasonal decor this enormous rat has pride of place in The Nag's Head in Abercych, North Pembrokeshire.

The story  is that, back in the 1950s, the villager became increasingly disturbed by sightings of a giant rodent and alarm mounted lest it multiply. Eventually it was speared by the 88 year old pub landlord using the garden fork with which he was digging potatoes. It turned out to be a South American coypu. Nobody knew how it reached this rural outpost although some were feral in East Anglia at the time (since eliminated).

Stuffed, the rat, weighing at over 10 pounds, has been a feature and talking point at the Nag's Head. Lost, or borrowed, for a while it was much missed and now the place would not be the same without it. It gets touch of tinsel along with the rest.

While writing this I heard of the death of another legendary pub figure, Bessie (aged 94) landlady of the eponymous Bessie's aka The Dyffryn Arms in Cwm Gwaun. I blipped her twice.

She was 94 and will be much missed. That she will live on in memories  and  tales I have no doubt.
