Tiny Tuesday - Sony RX100 Macro

Gradually delving deeper into my old Sony rx100 compact camera , this is the back of the lens and presumably the ratchet wheel controls the zoom.
However, I'm not at sure what the part shown in my extra is supposed to do. It was just behind the battery compartment.
