Crisp and Even

A back Blip to Boxing Day when the snow, though not deep glistened crisp and even in the sunshine. This is the Old Ferryman's Cottage beside the Spey at Boat of Garten. The ferryman, in addition to running a small farm was responsible for the ferry which consisted of platforms resting on boats hauled  by chains from   opposite banks of the river. It carried foot passengers and vehicles such as coaches and carriages at a charge of 1/6d and was first recorded in 1662 though may be older. The ferry closed in 1899 when a wooden bridge similar to the one at Broomhill was built across the river. It was, of course, for this ferry that Boat of Garten was named
