Strichen Stone Circle

A glorious frosty morning to start the year prompted a walk to Strichen stone circle.

The great recumbent stone and flankers of Strichen Stone Circle. Recumbents are a characteristic of Aberdeenshire stone circles and are thought to be so aligned that the horizontal surface of the recumbent and the upright flankers form a kind of viewing frame to watch the rising and setting of the major standstill moon which occurs every 18.6 years.

The circle dares from the 3rd or 2nd millennia BC. The mathematics involved in calculating its position is mind boggling.

The much later (18th century) white horse carved on Mormond Hill) is just visible in the background.
