January's Abundance

My illustration of the three forageable species listed for January in John Wright's "Forager's Calendar".

I went down to St Leonards-on-Sea in pretty bleak weather, wandering around under pier, over footbridge, keeping an eye out for black mustard. The closest I came was dandelion and groundsel.

However, I did find the wood ears! I brought some back to a friend to play with, not quite brave enough to eat this time. They are very ear-like, even having a fine down on the outside.
