Up up and away

We took delivery of 8 cubic metres of 10mm mulch at the allotment today for those of us trying the “no dig” approach to gardening. It’s supposed to be better for the soil ecosystem and also suppresses weeds.

A thick layer (10cm) of mulch is laid in 1 metre strips on a cardboard base with 1/2 metre between beds. Crops are planted or down directly into the mulch. Each year a further 2cm is added to the strips.

In a neat circular ecosystem we’re buying back mulch made from the green garden waste collected from our bins and commercially processed. It looks good stuff.

I had hope to start the process of creating the strips except the weather here was very unpleasant. Snow flurries, grey and a biting cold north easterly. I was glad to get home!
