Wake for Jimmy Shaw

Today I went to the Paddington RSL for the wake of drummer Jimmy Shaw who died last month at the age of 97. For much of his musical career he was leader of the Shawnuff Big Band, in which many of the band members playing for the wake today had performed.

Jimmy was also an eco warrior. Among his achievements was working in schools teaching the students about gardening and helping them to establish sustainable gardens in the school grounds.

Today's band had about 15 members with a big brass section including my niece on trumpet and the saxophonist in my photo. They gave a polished performance, thanks in no small part to Jimmy's mentorship. Greens Senator David Shoebridge was one of the few people who spoke today about Jimmy's life. The wake was more about the music and that would have pleased Jimmy.

Thanks for hosting Bob.
