Mileage

A striking mile post close to what is now the A950. This follows part of the route of  the 'turnpike' Road constructed in the early 19th century to link Aberdeen with the city's hinterland. In this case a branch  of the turnpike from Aberdeen to Peterhead- the PHD of the very precisely carved nscription.

Turnpike were toll roads and the name derives from the mechanism used to raise the barriers at toll houses.

Interestingly they were still being referred to as turnpike into the 1960s - a century after tolls were abolished.
