Father and son

The young White-Headed Woodpeckers living above my neighbors' tent are getting kind of giant. I suspect they'll be fledging any day now. White-Headed Woodpeckers incubate their eggs for 2 weeks. When the chicks hatch, they are altricial (i.e. helpless) and are fed from within the cavity for 12 days. For another 14 days, adults feed the young from outside the cavity, as Daddy has just done here.
