Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Victorian zoology

I have long had an interest in the history of zoological illustration and much admire the exquisite and detailed drawings, paintings, etchings and lithographs made by the Victorian naturalists. Today, it being cold and miserable outside,  I thought I might share yet another one with you.

This beautiful lithographic illustration is from A Monograph of The Fresh-Water Polyzoa by George James Altman Regius Professor of Natural
History in the University of Edinburgh. It was published by The Ray Society, in 1856. The lithographic engravings are the work of Tuffen West.
The lithograph shows a a specimen of Lophopus crystallinus. You can read all about the animal here.
