Mount Field national park

Abel Tasman was the first European to discover Tasmania in 1642. Larry our guide told us lots about Tasmania on the drive to Mount Field Mountain Park. The Tasmanian wilderness is a World heritage area. Trout and salmon fishing has been introduced, poppy farms, hops farms, sheep and cattle farms, raspberries, blackberries are grown to supply Australia. (We stopped at a raspberry place and bought a punnet of delicious big ones! ) Electricity is dominated by Hydro power stations.
Hobart is the second driest city after Adelaide because the rain falls mainly on nearby Mount wellington.
We followed the river Derwent with loads of black swans and stopped to take a short walk to a Russell Falls waterfall through dense forest with massive tall mountain ash trees and many fallen trees left to rot and become a habitat for animals.. We saw a few pademelons hopping on the path in front of us ( also called Rufous wallaby) which look like a small wallaby with shorter tails. Extinct in Australia. Common in Tassie and also a lot dead on the road ( as they are crepuscular when cars are about)
A very windy steep ride up to Lake Dobson, in mount Field National park. and a great walk up to the Rodway Hut and the the Tarn Shelf where we walked along to 3 tarns ( lakes). Robert , Mackenzie, Johnston. Partly on wooden boards and partly picking our way up and over huge boulders. On the way down we viewed lake Seal and lake Platypus. Unfortunately the weather was raining off and on with low cloud and poor visibility. It improved on the way back down. The trees, plants, flowers, and lichens were all fascinating. 31 native tree species and I can identify one - the pencil pine. Walk was 1 mile to the waterfall and 6 miles up to the tarns. Elevation. 1339ft .
We drove 12 km to Maydena where we are staying in a holiday house, and J is cooking us a curry tonight.
Larry escorted us to the lake and river where we spotted a platypus a few metres away bobbing up for air.
