These stairs lead to the front door.
Today I received a reply from the Australian Museum to my query about this insect.
So definitely a fly, but beyond that it gets a bit technical for all but the entomologists out there.
I'll paste the relevant part, but they were unable to fully identify it, as in order to do that they would need a specimen, a microscope and a detailed key.
The insect is a fly from the family Pelecorhynchidae, and its members are all nectar feeders, often on flowers from the family Myrtaceae. Your particular individual may be one of the rarer species of the genus Pelecorhynchus. We're not able to identify the species since the differences between species are microscopic and require a specimen in person, a microscope and a detailed key. Well spotted!
Take a look here for the page of the genus: https://bie.ala.org.au/species/https://biodiversity.org.au/afd/taxa/f7192612-7cf1-4cbe-b4c4-25369a68b200
I omitted the section where they waxed lyrical about the quality of the image, so all these Tiny Tuesdays have paid off:))
Today Australia's population passed 27 million.
Thanks for hosting Bob.
