Sunday: Ball Court

Today we drove to El Pilar, a Mayan site that we hadn’t visited before.  The drive itself was fascinating with a lot of it being on dirt roads.  El Pilar is apparently much overlooked in favour of the more famous sites of Xunantunich and Cahal Pech.  To be honest, I’m not surprised - it was definitely worth a visit but there’s really not a huge amount to see as the majority isn’t excavated (so there’s not a lot to actually look at).

But you could still get a sense of the layout.  The ball court was an important feature in Mayan cities.  Ball games were incredibly important and were thought to be linked to political rivalries or human sacrifices.

I’ve included an extra of the Mopan river which was a nice shade of blue today.

We’ve just finished ‘Boy Swallows Universe’ on Netflix.  We thoroughly enjoyed it.
