Chilli sauce?

I spied this in the salad bar at work and wondered what it was and why it needed labeling. It turns out that it's a pot of gel that they use to poke the thermometer in to check the salad bar is at the right cool temperature to keep us workers safe. 
They had to label it a while back as people kept opening it and dishing out a spoonful on their lunchtime selection. Don't think it's poisonous, but just isn't supposed to be food.  
Here endeth the rather dull lesson for the day!
