What did we do before supermarkets!

Was heading to asda today from work, it's 'our corner shop' , these trolleys caught my attention and set me off thinking about how people used to manage before supermarkets and trolleys became the norm.
I remember way back as a child we used to get
our large monthly grocery order delivered! From J and J Graham in Penrith . What excitement it used to be to have so many treats and food. It then became less exciting when we (us kids) had to help putting them all in the cupboards. I remember mum used to go to Carlisle each Friday to the butchers the Chemist and of course the covered market in Carlisle , as in those days each shop had its own area, ha remember miss jones's. chemist on
Botchergate! now of course they are all under one roof with trolley to help you spend more , because back then you used to have to carry everything back to the car so you only bought what you could carry.

Back in the day we used to have the butchers van and The 'bakers' van visit the farm. I think the baker used to come three times a week, with our bread order and other goodies we got to know him well ken hope he was Called he used to have a coffee and a Crack! Funnily enough one of his daughters works in asda now! butchers van only came once a week I
Don't really remember him.

How things have changed or have they? You can order your Groceries on line and pick them up or get
them delivered but it's not the same. The delivery man doesn't bring your goods into the house probably because of health and safety! And he certainly does not have the time or is the slightest bit interested in stopping long enough for a coffee or a
Crack.
Is it better now than then? I think not ! I think people are now in too much of a hurry not sure why, maybe everyone should do a daily blip to make them stop, look around and take in what life is rather than rushing on to the next chore without any thought or awareness of what is all around them.
