Quod oculus meus videt

Bradbury’s Bank

For the first time in three months R and I managed to join up for a walk in the Peak District.  Heavy rain yesterday, made the ground greasy so we decided to take advantage of the old railway lines, now repurposed as walkways.  We parked up at Fenny Bentley and headed up the Tissington Trail towards Coldeaton.

As we came off the track we headed across Bradbury’s Bank, where this photo was taken, looking down towards Dovedale.  All of the elevation we had achieved on the trail over 5 miles was lost in less than the next mile down towards the River Dove.  We looped back along the river to Thorpe, passing the famous stepping stones just as a young man was trying to cross.  We’d been in the area in the autumn and we were aware that a couple of the stones had been dislodged in previous storms.  Unfortunately for him the last stone he tried to stand on was loose and wobbled as he stepped on.  The next second he was knee deep in the cold water. It was a matter of great jollity for his friends standing on the other side of the river, and as he walked passed us the squelch of water in his boots was plainly heard.

We finished the walk passing Thorpe Cloud and across the fields and firing range to the car.
